The minutes of the July 12, 1978 meeting were approved as written. The minutes of
the August 9, 1978 meeting were approved as amended. Wilson Wilmarth's name was
added to the Members Present list. The fourth paragraph beginning "A report by
Wilson Wilmarth was given regarding legal services for the elderly." should also
be amended.
Eleanor Hoag introduced Rebecca Elliott, who is heading up a health survey for
Larimer County. Rebecca explained the significance of this move to Senior Citizens.
The elderly are least able to afford medical care - working poor. There are
enough physicians for health care but not always enough money to pay for services.
A CETA grant allows one person to work full time on this Questionnaire in order to
get statistics. Volunteers are needed to interview 800 families throughout Larimer
County and each interview takes 45 minutes. The project now has 400 families to
interview and $2000 is needed for costs and computer time. Interviewers are trained
and this takes about four hours. Private donations and churches have enabled the
project to continue.
Wilson Wilmarth reported on the meeting of "Police Protection for Senior Citizens"
in the Buckhorn Room at the Senior Center August 31st. Wilson asked for suggestions
re: a more meaningful title for the monthly meetings. S.O.S. - Senior Opportunities
and Safety was discussed and found to be the name of another group. The motion was
made and carried that we postpone the motion until next month.
F
John Arnold, City Manager, discussed property taxes and the average Senior Citizen.
It was discussed that sales tax could replace property tax but the City Council
must approve it first. The basic problem is the elderly are squeezed out of
homeownership by inflation and are still on a fixed income.
New Business: Dennis String, Council on Aging, announced a hearing screening on
eptember 26, 1978. On October 26, 1978, Weld and Larimer Counties will have a
Senior Citizen Political Rally from 2:00 - 4:30 P.M. at the McMillan Bldg.
There has been little distribution of the 1978-79 Directory of Services for
Senior Citizens since Jan Johnson left her job. The distribution will be extended.
The October 11, 1978 meeting of the Coordinating Commission for Senior Citizens
will be held in the City Council Chambers at 2:30 P.M.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
