CITIZEN PARTICIPATION
During the citizen's participation, several issues were raised:
1. Is there a senior advisory board for the county? Kay will
research this and report back to Andv Anderson.
2. How is the board involved in the new Senior Center? Jean
explained our past involvement and said that we would be involved
in data collection in the future.
3. Why haven't we approached United Seniors before this point?
Kay explained that the Board had just recently had their role
redefined by City Council and had been asked to be more involved
in an outreach program and collecting data for senior issues.
That prompted the change in meeting times so that, for this
month, the Board could make it convenient for United Seniors to
attend. Jean also suggested that United Seniors write a letter
to City Council requesting that the next appointed member to the
Senior Advisory Board be selected from their group, geographical
location, or special interest, whichever is appropriate. Billie
suggested that United Senior members also apply whenever there is
a vacancy.
APROVAL OF THE MINUTES
Marjorie McTaggart's name should be corrected from Margaret under
new business, item lc. Kathleen moved to approve the minutes as
corrected. Billie seconded and the vote was unanimous.
OLD BUSINESS
1. Senior Center update - Jean Helburg gave an update on the new
senior center. Barker-Rinker-Seacat was selected and will use
Vaught -Frye from Fort Collins. Contracts will be negotiated the
last week of August and meetings will begin in September. The
architect will host an open house to introduce the process team
to the public and will dispense additional information. The
senior center will be geared first and foremost to seniors, but
Jean said that Parks and Rec will also rent out and share space
for other activities during down times.
2. Outreach Committee - Yvonne explained what the committee was
and asked for persons from United Seniors who are interested in
sitting on the committee to contact her.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Senior Center Council Report - Vicki discussed visits to
other senior centers to look at their operations. She said that
$175 has been contributed for a new bingo program. The Center
will have a lemonade stand at New West Feet. The Center has
requested a $6000 grant from the Fort Collins Foundation for a
new duplicating machine.
2. Area Agency on Aging Report - Barb said that the six month
assessment had just been completed. Their board met with dif-
ferent agencies funded by the Area Agency on Aging to determine
how funding was used. They will now begin looking at new
requests. With federal and state budget problems, fewer monies
will be available for programs. They have 35% less to allocate -
they are currently looking at ways to deal with this dilemma.
Three board members have recently resigned because of illness.
Barb said that the office was extremely pleased with the response
and the protest support from United Seniors.
OPEN DISCUSSION
1. Barb read the guidelines for open meetings. This item will
be presented for Council approval on August 21st.
2. Continum of Care Coalition is interested in revitalizing the
ad -hoc organization. A brainstorming session will be held on
August 23 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Larimer County Services Center.

had been painted _s of August 11. Pat said .,at 27 out of the 30
applications will be painted. Three were too young to qualify.

so First Interstate has offered to underwrite the event for next
year. It will be called the Harvest Moon Ball and will be Yield
on Saturday, September 15 from 8 p.m. to,midnight at the Lincoln
Center. Otto Werner's band will perform. -Vicki is in charge of
decorations. They are hoping to sell 500 tickets at $10 each.
Barb asked that people interested in selling tickets contact her.

bake sale to raise money for the Senior Games athletes that
qualified for nationals in Syracuse. The money will help pay
their travel expenses.
6. Marjorie reported that the Senior Educational Focus Group has
sent a letter of intent to the dean for Applied Human Sciences.
The letter is a preview of a proposal asking for low cost or no
cost situations for seniors. The proposal'also requests that the
parking "problem" be resolved. Marjorie said that the letter was
not specific but she felt that the following proposal would be
more in depth. Kay will provide an information sheet on parking
alternatives for Marjorie to take back to their next meeting.
Free visitor permits are available and this "problem" may more be
one of not knowing what alternatives exist, according to Kay.
7. Name tags have been requested for new members.
S. Jean reported that Anheuser-Busch donated $55,000 to
Northside Atzlan Community Center. This fall the money will be
used to improve air circulation in the gym and redo the gym
floor. The exterior of the building will also be sealed. Next
year, locker rooms will be upgraded. Jean asked that suggestions
be passed on to Deborah.
