HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Advisory Board - Minutes - 11/02/19710 0 COORDINATING COMMISSION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS Monthly Meeting November 2, 1971 The monthly meeting of the Mayors Commission on Aging was held in the City Council Chamber on Tuesday, November 2, 1971, at 4:00 P.M. Present: Mrs. Nancy Stegner Mr. Walter B. Peterson Dr. Harry Sobel Mr. W. J. Boggs Rev. Clarence H. Hinkhouse W. R. Jim Deitloff Mrs. Doris S. Atkinson Absent: Dr. Douglas Murray Officers were elected as follows: Chairman, Nancy Stegner; Vice Chairman, Walter B. Peterson; Publicity Chairman, W. R. Jim Deitloff; and Secretary, Doris S, Atkinson. A regular meeting date for the Commission was designated as the second Wednesday of each month at 3:30 P.M., in the City Council Chamber. The next meeting will be held Thursday, December 16, 1971, in the Friendship Room of the Home Savings Building, Howes at Oak, in conjunction with the Fort Collins Chapter of the AARP and the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee. The Senior Citizens Advisory Committee is made up of representa- tives of eighteen senior citizens groups. The Senior Citizens Advisory Committee and the Fort Collins chapter of the AARP meet together on al- ternate months. The program for the December 16th meeting will be "tax relief for seniors." Jim Deitloff volunteered to contact Mr. Robert B. Robinson or Mr. W. N. Leuthauser, Colorado State Department of Social Services, department of services for the aging, 1575 Sherman Street, Denver, Colorado, 80203, and request that one of them serve as a keynote speaker for this meeting. Topics suggested were: Information on pro- posed tax relief, Present tax relief legislation, and/or Tax relief as practiced in other areas of the United States. Nancy Stegner appointed herself and Doris Atkinson to invite members of the City Council and the Larimer County Commissioners or their representatives to the meeting. Senior citizens activity week which will be held in May, 1972, was discussed. Dr. Sobel suggested Mable Preble and Nancy Stegner be named a chairman and co-chairman. Other suggestions were: to ask for assis- tance from the Chamber of Commerce; to invite the Junior High School bands to play for the parade; to plan around a centeral theme such as "ACTION NOW ON RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE"; to select a chairman for the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee; and fin- ally, that each commission member be prepared to recommend a senior citizen for the chairmanship. Senior Citizens Commission Page 2 November 2, 1971 There was discussion of the proposal that a newsletter be published and circulated; the newsletter to contain information from each senior group as well as from the Commission. One purpose of the newsletter would be to locally activate White House Conference recommendations. Doris S. Atkinson Secretary
