Relief for low income ergons from ro osed sale tax: The Secretary
reported on t e joint meeting of the Commission and the DT Committee called by
the City Manager on December 5, 1972 to reconsider the Commission's recommenda-
tion to the City Council regarding remission of the proposed sales tax on food
for low income persons. Discussion of the question developed the following
points:
1. The proposed capital improvements program includes several items
that will be of direct benefit to low income senior citizens.
2. Low income citizens are presently eligible for relief through the
food stamp program which far more than offsets any sales tax on food.
3. Exclusion of low income citizens including university students
would exclude many whose only financial contribution to the community is through
the sales tax.
In light of these arguments, the Commission voted unanimously to
rescind its recommendation of October 19, 1972 and to so notify the Council.
DT2 Programs: The Commission will consider the several proposals of the
DT2 program at its next meeting.
Community use of schools: Ernesto Roberto from Poudre R1 School District
spoke on the use of city schools for community programs including adult education.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
