MEETING MINUTES
August 26, 1999
Those present at the meeting include the following: Don Fish, Nancy Baker, Laura Burnett,
Initha Stuckey, Mark Beck, Mark Kramer, David Marckres, (visitor) Susan Williams, City
Staff Liaison Steve Seefeld
Before the meeting officially opened there was discussion opened by Steve Seefeld
concerning the Mayors Awards Program. Steve and David M. had gone through most of
the COD's documents, passed along from Blair Leist to the new Liaisons, and didn't find
much in the way of help for setting up the event. Fortunately, after contacting Blair, Steve
and Bob had been able to get some additional information from last years event. We don't
want to have to "reinvent the wheel" with this thing! Nancy Baker contributed some items
she had saved from previous years, such as an "invitation", that we can revise for this
years event. David Marckres has agreed to "chair" the committee for putting on the
program. Laura will help as well. Steve Seefeld will contact the Mayor to see if he can
attend and speak briefly during the program. Nancy has contacted Bridget Hoolihan
(Communication and Publications) at CSU to be our keynote speaker.
The meeting opened with the first agenda item concerning election of COD Officers. We
need to do this in September. In addition, it appears that we are currently two members
short. We need to have two new members appointed by Council. In addition, we haven't
seen Nathan for some time. Don Fish will attempt to contact him to see if wishes to
continue with the group. Steve Seefeld will pass the membership needs along to Diane
Jones to see if we can have some people appointed soon. Also, Laura Burnett
commented that she may not be able to continue with the Commission due to career
changes.
Following Jean Batchelders' presentation last meeting, the group discussed our possible
affiliation with " Rocky Mountain Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center".
Members brought up possible pros & cons. It may be a conflict of interest for the COD to
formally participate as an affiliate. The issue was -tabled for now. Don Fish will collect
more information from Jean.
Don Fish was contacted by "someone", presumably in a City Department, about the COD
being able to help with ADA compliance suggestions in a building space they were going
to occupy. Don has a phone number for, "John Schraeder", the contact person. Mark
Beck will contact the inquirer to see if he can help out.
Agenda item number two was to discuss the schedule for further Outreach meetings with
service organizations. Steve Seefeld sent out invitations to various boards and
commissions on August 12th. The next Outreach meeting is scheduled for October 28th
with an RSVP request.
Steve Seefeld has spoken with Carson Hamlin (TV cable 27) about close captioning or a
live interpreter for City Council meetings. The technology for close captioning live events
is not to the point where this is practical or affordable yet. The technology is improving
rapidly however, so, maybe in a few years this will be more appropriate and economically
feasible. A live "Interpreter' is an option that is available with screen -in -screen camera
work. The Interpreter would work on an hourly rate. Laura Burnett mentioned that she
seems to remember the promise of an interpreter for the Cable 27 broadcasts in the new
Mayors campaign pledges. It was decided to send a request to the Mayor for this
communications aide be implemented as soon as possible. David Marckres said he would
draft a request memo.
There was no presentation or report, at this meeting, from Transportation on expanding
the route and increase in service time for buses and Dial -a -Ride. However, it was
mentioned by our quest, Susan Williams, that a new bus route had been added west on
Mulberry to 1-25. Also there was now a Dial -a -Ride Service to various locations in Denver
and to DIA.
The meeting ran long and was adjourned at 1:45 PM.
