At the October 7 meeting Mark Kramer announced the Bravo Awards Banquet in Greeley and stated he would be attending. It was announced that Eric Bracke, the City Traffic Engineer, has given approval to Tom Cook to try his flag trees at the intersection of Prospect and Shields on a trial basis. This generated a lot of discussion amoung COD members and Tom Cook has been invited to discuss this idea further with the COD at the November 18, 1999 retreat. Steve Sutter is heading up a committee looking into matching employer with disabled employees. Allan Apt will keep the COD informed on this issue. Easter Seals, Donna Schultz, is getting ready to start a web site that will also help disabled find jobs. The Boards and Commissions Outreach Meeting October 28, 1999 was announced at the Oct 7, 1999 meeting. (page 3) In the October 28, 1999 Boards and Commissions Meeting The mission statement, and outreach objectives, as well as, accomplishments and the video that the Commission on Disability created were presented. Discussion led to the subjects of affordable housing and what the city is doing in the area of affordability and accessibility. Accessibility is something that Fort Collins has led the way, by example, especially in it's own public buildings. Over 240 projects were implemented to provide accessibility in City Buildings in 1994 and 1995 by myself utilizing outside contractors. While private residents can not be required to have wheel chair accessibility the city has encouraged it. While, the "City Plan" does decrease the foot print and requires a second floor. It was pointed out, that not all disabilities, require a wheel chair, and some disabilities have needs that conflict with wheel chair user needs. The need for affordable housing was also discussed, Grants and incentives were discussed as a means of helping with this issue. The 1999 Mayor's Awards, was discussed, and it should be noted, and thanks given to Diane Jones for the exceptional success of this event. Funding of this project was approximately, $2,500.00. This year's cost significantly exceeded last year's Mayor's Awards costs. Some members expressed their desire to expand this next year, yet, 79 agencies were asked to participant in this event this year. Approximately 92 people sent in RSVP to be at this event this year. It was very successful event for both the Commission on Disability and the City of Fort Collins at rewarding those who have this year preformed outstanding service for the disabled. Special thanks to David Marckres and Laura Burnett also. The next meeting will be held November 18, 1999 from 11:15 to 3:30 in the CIC Room of City Hall and will be the retreat meeting. The Agenda will include: • Tom Cook and Flag Tree Presentation. • Discussion and establishment of a committee to provide: COMMISSION ON DISABILITY 2000 WORKPLAN. • Discussion and establishment of a committee to write a YEAR END REPORT to THE CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE. • Discussion by Allan Apt on brown bag. • Discussion on Transportation Grant. The meeting after the November 18, 1999 meeting will be held December 9, 1999 and will be the only December meeting and last meeting of this year. RAP
