New members who had been oriented at a luncheon were introduced. They are: John Roberts, June Tucker, Dorothy Kramka. Citizen Participation rff= Correspondence 1. Received solicitations from two publications about seniors — "Senior Care Management" and "Subacute Care." 2. Yvonne Myers sent a thank you note for the gift and party. 3. Received invitation to Transfort Open House on July 22. 4. Application from Commission on the Status of Women for the Marcile N. Wood award. 5. Letter from City Manager about planning the Policy Agenda. 6. Communication from Kelly DiMartino about Excellence in Public Participation award. Barbara will call her for more information. V. Approval of Minutes Unanimously approved. VI. Guest Speaker Dr. Tracy Thomas spoke about her first time Pet Health Fair, held in June, for routine treatment of well animals. It's a fund raiser for Elder Pet Care. She would like more local veterinarians and clinics to become involved. Hopes the Fair will be ongoing. Community Fund has given a grant to provide pet transportation to veterinarians. Elder Pet Care also received grants from Rotary Club. Trying to arrange home visits. Fees would be on a sliding scale. Also trying to find homes for pets whose owners are unable to care for them. Need publicity for funds. VII. Old Business A. Transportation — Florence Truck routes — pros and cons still being weighed. Regional transportation group voted to spend $675,000 to begin construction. Balance of funding from Larimer County. No approval as yet. Transportation one of top concerns of seniors. Colorado Commission on Aging took recommendations to Governor and Legislature on July 8. Gannet Foundation awarded $17,000 grant to Fort Collins and Loveland Elderhaus for daytime assistance to elderly. Transfort celebrating 25 years of service in Fort Collins. B. Housing — Kay Ten subsidized housing units in Larimer County. There are concerns about mobile homes and tenants' rights. Some living in mobile homes are threatened by new policies of new owners. Property on Horsetooth purchased for low income housing. Northern Hotel and Kaufman Broad project still need financing. Ongoing surveys being conducted by Affordable Housing Board. Manufactured housing considered. Affordable Housing Board wants First Right of Appeal to go before City Council to possibly become an ordinance. Affordable housing funds in question. C. IYOP First National Bank has donated $450 to fund New West Fest booth. Other sponsors contributed nearly $2,000 to cover other expenses among which are purchase of 5,000 tote bags on which will be printed logo of IYOP. Dignity photo display will be displayed at the booth. Job Fair will be held on October 27 at Senior Center sponsored by Independence Committee. Womens' Gathering to be held at Senior Center on October 20 sponsored by Dignity. D. New West Fest - Kay Dates are August 21 and 22 from 10 a.m: 6 p.m. (21") and 11-6 (22"a) OOA and SAB will share a booth. Volunteers needed. Kay has sign-up sheet. E. Senior Network Luncheon - Erik Date is September 23 from 10 a.m. — 2 p.m. Plans going smoothly. Next committee meeting July 22, at 8 a.m. F. Senior Research Analysis — George Seniors make up about 12% of population in Larimer County. Difficult to determine exact figures on this. Each agency determines "senior" at a different age. George is still in process of compiling statistical information. Some questions to be answered: Are seniors good for community? What do they contribute? G. Legislature — Barbara OOA on a national level is petitioning Congress for reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, which has been pending since 1995. Organization provides basic needs for seniors. Larimer County and Colorado contribute some of the smallest amounts to older adult services in the country. Should Senior Center and SAB initiate our own petition? Kay Rios will take a copy of the petition to OOA Advisory Board for local action. H. Liaisons Reports 1. Senior Center Council — Alyce Luncheon was held for initiation and introduction of new members. Dorothy Kramka liaison to SAB. Pancake breakfast on June 30 well attended. Council hosted the dessert for Progressive Dinner. 2. PVH System and Southern LC Senior Network — Erik. Senior Network Luncheon on September 23 at Fort Collins Senior Center. All SAB members expected to attend. PVH System — Medicare supplement "Colorado Select' now being sold to seniors. Southern LC Senior Network will hold 56' annual Celebrate Life Conference October 16 at Chilson Senior Center. (Loveland) 3. Aspen Club — Blanche 3. Aspen Club — Blanche Starting in August, club will offer a quarterly Healthy Heart Screening along with PVH Heart Center. Aspen Club looking into possibility of offering its services to outlying areas such as Loveland and Estes Park Jill will receive SAB minutes in future. 4. Commission on Status of Women — Marjorie Their minutes state that Marjorie has expressed her opinion about their omission of older women in annual report. Marjorie wants City Council and Coloradoan to be aware of this. Commission suggested SAB do survey on seniors. 5. OOA — Kay LC Ombudsman Program Survey distributed to members. Much pertinent information. VIII. New Business A. Homecoming Parade discussed. IYOP to have a float. Chris Goes is chair. B. Liaison assignments. Tabled to next meeting. George suggested we have a liaison to County Commissioners. C. Chili Cook -Off Date — October 9 at Sundance. Kay described it for benefit of new members. Erik will be team captain for SAB team. IX. Other Business 1. New awning donated by Friends of the Senior Center now in place. 2. Robyn Franklin has been hired to replace Ankie Stroes. She will be in charge of Fitness and Wellness. 3. City Line — Corrections as to current information in works. Should be ready by August. Board discussed marketing to make public (and seniors) aware of its availability. 4. Human Relations award.
