The Board gathered at 1:00 PM for a light lunch and slides taken by John Roberts during his recent "around -the -world" trip. II. The official meeting was then called to order by Erik Margolis at 2:00 PM III. Guest: Ms. Diana Hutcheson, Larimer County Ombudsman Program, Office on Aging made a presentation. The Ombudsman Program focuses on Health Care Facilities, Nursing Homes and Personal Care Boarding Homes. The Program provides a residence counseling voice for seniors and empowers residents who are 60+ years of age. There are 9 volunteer assistants in the Program. The major concerns include food, overall numbers and quality of staff (nurses and nurses aides). Ms. Hutcheson said that the Senior Advisory Board could assist by providing enhanced education for seniors regarding advanced planning for their future and, when possible, volunteer within the Ombudsman Program as speakers in various health care facilities. Brochures on the overall Program were provided to all Board Members. I.V. Correspondence: The Board was briefed on the recent City-wide Meeting of Boards and Agencies. An informational letter from SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) was read. V. The Minutes of the previous Board meeting of May 10, 2000 were approved with the following corrections: Page 2- Changing the name of the Exec. Director of Neighbor to Neighbor to "Rusty," instead of "Randy;" and amending the Senior Advisory Board responsibilities for the New West Fest (Aug. 19 & 20, 2000) to setting up the Senior Booth, but not having to taking it down. VI Old Business / Reports: A. Transportation: Florence Williams reported that the Round -About planned for Mulberry/Lemay has now been approved by CDOT. Construction will begin soon. The official opening of the Harmony / I-25 has been set for June 20, 2000. Page 2 B. Outreach: The Latimer County Residence Council meeting was attended by Eric Margolis, George Kress, and Barbara Schoenberger. Eric once again mentioned that the Senior Advisory Board needs concise outreach presentation that can be provided to various council and agency meetings. He offered to provide a first draft. C. Discount Medications: A recent Senior's Column article was submitted by Blanche to The Coloradoan for June publication. John Pfifenburger, Senior Center Staff, also wrote an article on this subject for Pathways. D. New West Fest: Darren will contact Kay Rios regarding clarification of the Senior Advisory Board role for the August 19-20, 2000 event. E. Chili Cook Off: Preliminary plans are underway for this October 7, 2000 event at the Sundance Restaurant. Barbara and John have agreed to coordinate the SAB participation after the challenge by the Office on Aging. We will work toward the Showmanship Trophy with the Chili theme of Young at Heart. F. Friends of the Senior Center: The Annual Summer Pot -Luck Picnic will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2000 at the Senior Center from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. Salads or Deserts are needed for "sharing" but all other food will be provided. SAB Members are urged to attend. Membership in FOSC is $10 per year. G. Other Liaison Reports: 1. Senior Network Luncheon — George is our liaison to the planning for this luncheon which is scheduled for Sept. 29, 2000 at the McKee Hospital in Loveland. SAB Members are asked to attend to serve as table facilitators. 2. City Boards and Commissions: Eric reported that all Board member dates have been extended from June 30 to December 30, annually. This does affect three members of the SAB. 3. Mardi Gras: Advanced planning for the 2001 Mardi Gras, Feb. 1, 2001, is well underway as reported to Darren. SAB members should plan to attend. 4. Senior Center: Dorothy reported that the plethora of recent events have been well - supported. A recent survey at the Center listed many recommendations and suggestions. A new Bingo Machine will be purchased. Parking spaces remain scarce and more space is being sought. Barbara reported that more volunteers are needed to serve at the Center. 5. Aspen Club: Blanche reported that the Aspen Club (Senior medical assistance through PVH) continues to grow with more than 10,000 members. The new PVH Harmony Road campus will open soon with lots of services. A special presentation for Seniors at the Lincoln Center on July 19 at 2:00 PM will feature Bob Payton, a folk musician and recreation therapist Page 3 6. Cemetery Crawl: Barbara reported that this popular senior event will be held on June 24 at Grandview Cemetery with starting times of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. 7. Office on Aging: Eric reported on OOA's role — Publicity/Information, Prescription Medications, Affordable Housing, and Home Health Care. 8. Foundation on Aging: George reported that the Foundation had been briefed by Kay Rios and Shelly McGraw on their trip to Washington DC to attend advocacy training sessions sponsored by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. (The Foundation provided some funds to help defray Kay's expenses for this trip.) Guy Helme, handyman coordinator for RSVPNOA requested that the Foundation continue to oversee the acquisition and distribution of carbon monoxide monitoring kits for low income seniors. The Foundation also agreed to provide $1000 to Elderhaus to supplement fees for some low income attendees and provided $55 to a senior for an emergency medical prescription need. 9. Loveland Senior Advisory Board: The 2000 Job Fair will be sponsored this year by the Loveland SAB and will take place on September 21, 2000. VII. New Business A. City Line: The new Guide as been published with a complete Resource Listing. The SAB is the main provider of resources for seniors. Kristin had previously volunteered to monitor the City Line requests weekly. Barbara will check and review options for the City Line. B. Dial -A -Ride: It is unclear whether Dial -A -Ride currently provides services to and from nursing home facilities. Darren and Blanche will follow up. VII. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:55 PM. The next meeting of the Senior Advisory Board will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at the Senior Center.
