approved with one (1) nay.

None
IV. Correspondence:
A. Memo from Karla Smith, City of Fort Collins City Clerk's Office, reminding
members to always keep their addresses updated.
B. Memo from Karla Smith reporting that there is several vacancies on City Boards &
Commissions. Encourage good candidates to apply.
V. New Business:
A. City Line — City Line is the on -call City Hall designed to provide citizens with
information about City of Fort Collins programs and services 24 hours a day. Since
inception, the Senior Advisory Board has maintained the Senior Resource Network
that is listed in the directory. Maintaining the information completely and accurately
has been more and more a challenge for the Board members. Additionally, there is
indication that few calls have been received. The Office on Aging has dedicated a
person to providing information and referral, and the County is developing the new
211 system for senior services. The deadline for renewal was imminent; therefore,
Barbara made the decision to discontinue senior services on City Line. The Board
concurred.
B. After having a difficult time finding a doctor's office located at the Harmony
Hospital, Maxine Yankey suggested that an address sign be installed. The address for
the Harmony Hospital is 2120 Harmony. It does not say so on the sign for the
Hospital.
VI. Old Business:
A. Review Work Plan
1. Media — John Roberts and Kristen Glenn wrote letters to the Coloradoan
expressing concern that there was no longer a senior focused section in the local
newspaper for older citizens in the community. Mike encouraged all Board
members to write letters. John suggested that the Senior Advisory Board also
write an official letter. The executive board will create the letter.
2. Schedule outreach — Jim Downey reported an invitation for a luncheon at The
Worthington at 12:00 noon prior to the meeting that will also be held at that
location on Wednesday, October 9. The luncheon will be hosted by Columbine
Health Services, and, therefore, there will be no fee for SAB members. Jim made
the motion to accept the invitation. Florence seconded the motion. Motion
carried.
3. Chili Cook Off— John Roberts, team captain asked for a show of hand for those
who willing to help at this annual fund raising activity for the Fort Collins Senior
Center. Five (5) Board members volunteered to help. John asked for $10.00 from
all board members for ingredients. October 13a' is the date of the Chili Cook Off
held at the Senior Center. The costume will be funny hats.
4. Liaison with Los Ancianos — Mike Buderus reported that the next meeting for the
Human Relations Commission will be October 10.
5. Advocacy Issues:
a. City Plan — No report.
b. Affordable Housing — No report.
c. Transportation — Florence Williams reported that after the City Council
meeting last week it was decided to bundle two proposals to raise tax revenue
for transportation projects into a single question on the November ballot.
Other transportation news includes I-25 corridor design is under way with sub
i
area plan, outlining developmental guidelines for land use & design standards.
City Council is scheduled to vote sometime before the end of the year.
d. Senior Center Funding — Barbara Schoenberger reported that the City
Manager has made a statement saying that City sales tax has been down. Cuts
will be made. CLRS will experience a 5% cut. Results of this might be
higher costs for services. Staff continues to focus on cutting costs and fund
raising activities. The Cemetery Crawl September 21" at Grandview
Cemetery. Tickets are $6.00 with performances at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
6. Office on Aging Needs Survey — Dean Williams reported on the recent Public
Forum. Caregiving issues including respite care for caregivers, medication
management, health management, senior mental health needs, and transportation
were the major topics and issues presented by those present. One theme identified
was the negative stereotypical views about aging and older people ("I wish people
could see us as we really are"). Minds of older people are not used and
stimulated. Visiting Nurse or Parish Nurse concept was viewed as highly
desirable and effective. Living at home alone was discussed a lot among the
seniors who were present. There seemed to be a consensus that an awful lot of
seniors are lonely and it was repeatedly mentioned that most of them are grouchy
and they need someone to visit them. Catholic Chanties Northern Friendly
Visitor Program was viewed as being highly desirable and needed.
7. Relationship with City Council — Mike Buderus encouraged Board members to
get together with their council representative. John Roberts suggested e-mail as
an effective communication tool.
8. Meetings with Mayor — Mike Buderus will meet with the Mayor quarterly.
9. Recruitment of SAB members — Jim Downey will speak with Elaine Buenos for
suggestions of a good Board member from the Hispanic community.
10. Bridging the Gap Senior Network Lunch — Jim Downey reported that he would be
meeting with the committee next week. Friday, September 27`h is the date of
event. Those wishing to carpool should meet at the Senior Center at 9:30a.m.
VII. Liaison Reports
A. Larimer County Senior Network — Mike Buderus reported no new activity.
B. Commission on the Status of Women — Dianne Heath and members from the
Commission on the Status of Women had a booth at the Grandparents Day event at
the Senior Center. They distributed a survey to measure the concerns that older
women have locally. On October 17`h AARP will hold a conference at the Senior
Center. Eileen Hendee made a suggestion to have a booth to do the surveys there
also. Maxine Yankey volunteered to man the booth. After reading the surveys from
Grandparents Day, it appears that the primary concern is transportation, affordable
housing, and prescriptions. A report will be put together and sent to City Council
when enough information has been collected.
C. Senior Center — Maxine Yankey reported that the Friends of the Senior Center social
held on August 29 was a very nice event. There was a good turn out but could be
better. Friends furnished ice cream and pie. The Friends support the Senior Center
with enthusiasm. Grandparents Day had more participation than last year.
D. AARP — On October 17`h, AARP and the Senior Center are sponsoring all -day
conference open to the public. The theme is "Brighten Your Golden Years",
featuring prominent speakers and local experts. Complimentary brunch starts at
8a.m., and the conference ends after a free lunch. Keynote speaker is CSU's coach
Sonny Lubick.
E. Aspen Club — Eileen Hendee reported that the Aspen Club has sold 1,000
pedometers. People are very motivated by the "10,000 step challenge". The Aspen
Club has received a $1,600 grant from the Office on Aging to purchase health related
brochures & literature. They are purchasing The 5 Wishes Advanced Directives;
Arthritis, Alzheimer's, memory -related material; and AHA brochures. Aspen Club
should hear this week whether they get a site visit for the $1 million Robert Woods
Johnson grant. On October 9'h "Taking Care of Mom & Dad from Near & Far", a
caregiver program presented the same night as PBS special on caregiving. The Aspen
Club program will be finished before the broadcast begins.
F. Office on Aging/Ombudsman Program — Florence Williams reported that abuse by
family members could happen to seniors also. This sort of abuse often goes
unreported because of shame and the fear of consequences.
G. Channel 9 produced a program informing viewers of necessary precautions &
provisions of necessary items in case of attack, floods, & all natural disasters. This
would be worthy of obtaining a video and showing at different functions.
H. TRIAD — Marjorie McTaggart reported to the Board that the City has decided not to
hold a car safety inspection event this year. TRIAD was willing to be a partner and
will continue to look for opportunities in the fixture.
VIII. Adjourn
The Executive meeting will be held Monday, September 30 at 3:30 P.M. at the Fort Collins
Senior Center.
Next meeting will be held at the Worthington on Wednesday, October 9`h at 1:30 P.M. Lunch
