II. Approval of Minutes:
Jim Downey made a motion to approve the minutes. Diane seconded the motion.
Minutes were approved with the following corrections:
Dianne's name was spelled wrong in two places.
Under Liaison reports, section B — Dianne Heath made a suggestion to have a
booth to do surveys, not Eileen Hendee.
III. Citizen Participation:
• Marjorie Kerbs - Light needed on Centre at the east end of Worthington. Residents
can not cross street because traffic will not stop. The speed limit needs to be reduced.
Atrix is expanding, new Federal, and it's now a cut through to Prospect, all creating
more traffic.
• Sylvia Maxey — Worthington Circle needs speed limit lowered from 25 to 20 m.p.h.
• Sidewalks of adjacent properties need to be kept cleared from plants. Owners of
undeveloped properties along Centre have needed to be prompted to clear weeds.
Residents would like the City to be more proactive in monitoring these walkways.
• Wilson E. Wilmarth, - Transportation is a difficult issues for residents. Transportation
to the hospital is difficult. Residents also need transportation on Saturday & Sunday.
Also, there is no bus service to new hospital on Harmony.
Mike Buderus responded to the residents on behalf of the Board indicating that residents
should write or call the City directly. The SAB will also investigate what they can do to
assist in solving these problems.
IV. Correspondence:
A. Poudre Valley Green Party sent a pamphlet of information. Meetings are on the
second Thursday of each month at 7 P.M. at the Poudre Valley Fire Authority Office.
V. New Business:
A. Marcille Wood Award — Jim Downey has the name of our nominee, Jo Thompson
(equals rights and special programs for women), and has been waiting for application.
The deadline for nomination is the end of October.
B. Bake Sale — Don Redabaugh & Maxine Yankey, Senior Center Council
representatives passed sign up sheets for baked goods, or a cash donation for the
Holiday Craft Fair and Bake Sale to be held at the Senior Center on November 29 and
30. Proceeds from the bake sale last year were used to refinish the wood floors in the
multi -use rooms.
C. PBS will broadcast a show on caregiving tonight.
VI. Old Business:
A. Review Work Plan
1. Media — Mike Buderus asked for a volunteer to write a letter on behalf of the
Board to the Coloradoan expressing concern that there was no longer a senior
focused section in the local newspaper for older citizens in the community.
Kristen Glenn volunteered.
2. Outreach — Thanks to Jim Downey for organizing the luncheon at The
Worthington prior to the meeting. The luncheon was hosted by Columbine
Health Services and there was no fee for SAB members.
3. Chili Cook Off— John Roberts asked that available members meet Saturday at
5:30 P.M. to shop for ingredients for the Chili Cookoff. Each Board member
must contribute $10 for the event. Everyone should wear a crazy hat and hang a
metaphor around their neck. The team will be "The Young at Heart "burn"
Chili." The team will set up at 8 A.M. at the Senior Center to begin cooking. The
gong will be present. Articles in the newspaper have been very good and the
event sounds very exciting.
4. Liaison with Los Ancianos — Mealsite meeting during I" quarter next year. Mike
will schedule.
5. Advocacy Issues:
a. Transportation — Florence Williams reported that Council approved Mulberry
Corridor plan unanimously. Federal Transit Administration has designated
Fort Collins, Loveland, and Berthoud as a transportation management area or
TMA making it eligible for 1.8 million in federal funding in 2003. An offer
from Fort Collins Transfort system to help with those administrative duties led
to discussions of it taking over management duties of "Loveland" Transit.
6. Office on Aging — Dean Miller reported that focus group (N=79) summaries will
be available around October 15`h. The purpose was to decide which service areas
to fund. State funding for OOA for 2003 is approximately 40% less than last
year. Margaret Long was introduced as the new Program Manager for LCOOA.
She has worked in County Human Services for 25 years and has been on the
Western Slope for 20 years, and has 35 years of experience in Human Services in
Colorado. An Affordable Housing Fair will be held October 16`h and 17`h
7. Relationship with City Council — Mike Buderus encouraged everyone to contact
his or her City Council representative. Some members of the Board felt
uncomfortable initiating communication because they don't know their
representatives. John Roberts suggested a wine and cheese social at the Senior
Center so that the Board members can have an opportunity to know the City
Council representatives. Some concern was expressed that City Council members
are quite busy and may not attend such a function. Barbara Schoenberger
suggested an early evening get together with the Board providing a meal prior to a
Council Work session. Barbara will check the possibilities
8. Meetings with Mayor — Mike Buderus will meet with the Mayor quarterly.
9. Recruitment of SAB members — Barbara reported that no applications have been
received to date for the SAB. Members indicated that they have encouraged
individuals to apply. They are very interested in creating more diversity on the
Board and hope that the City Council will keep this in mind when interviewing
applicants.
10. Bridging the Gap Senior Network Lunch — Bridging the Gap was deemed to be a
good event that met the goals by the members of the Senior Advisory Board who
attended. The SAB was pleased that their nominee, Kay Rios, was awarded the
recognition award. Jim Downey reported that the committee would meet October
16`h to review and evaluate.
VII. Liaison Reports
A. AARP - Jim Downey, the November meeting of AARP will be stories from "The
Greatest Generation", both from the home front and the war front of World War II.
B. Aspen Club — Eileen Hendee — Flu shot clinics will be held October 23'd, 301h and
November 4`h and 8`h. Clinics are filling up quickly. Tetanus and first time only
pneumonia shots will also be available.
• The Aspen Club did not get the Robert Woods Johnson grant but learned much
from the process and won't be intimidated to apply for grants in the future.
• In response to discussion at an earlier SAB meeting, the Aspen Club will have an
article in the December newsletter regarding the benefits of pet ownership for
seniors. The article will also mention Elder Pet Care.
• Dr. Michael Thakor a new rheumatologist in Fort Collins will begin seeing
patients on November I". His office will be at the Harmony Campus, phone
number 267-9799. There is a great need in Fort Collins for a rheumatologist.
C. Office on Aging/Ombudsman Program — Florence Williams — Abuse by family
members can happen to seniors also, many more than we hear about because of
victim's fear of consequences. Channel 9 program informing viewers of necessary
precautions & provisions of necessary items in case of attacks, floods & all natural
disasters.
