V Business Items
A Updated Karen on a meeting that Rita and Lisa G had with Greg Byrne and
Joe Frank Talked about transportation for women with day care needs
Putting bus stops near day care providers Cost is also lugh for development
for people looking at opening new day cares Also talked about the issue of
increased traffic in neighborhoods when there is a day care in the
neighborhood Talked about setting up a clearinghouse for information on
providers and needs Baby sitting co-ops may also be a way to meet the need
Something that will encourage in home providers to take subsidized children
Also talked about having a cluld care conference to inform people of the
issues related to child care Thousands of children are going without care and
there is a crisis related to crime and teen pregnancy All these issues would be
handled by different departments within the City Joe Frank will be putting
together a list for the Commission of who we need to contact at each division
of the City to ask about these issues Summer care for kids is also an issue

and working with Parks and Rec may be a way to address this issue Where
the Commission needs councils help is to show there is a compelling need
Karen stated this is similar to the Affordable Housing need, If we can put it at
the same level there may be a way to have this adopted as a policy Perhaps
we need to move the focus to see that this issue is at the same status as
affordable housing and can we look at this as a crisis issue Karen
recommended that we look at and focus in on a part of the child care issue,
affordability, single women etc versus a crisis for the entire community child
care issue If we can hone down the focus we may have a better chance at
getting programs and funding to assist with the needs Also can possibly be a
part of the council policy agenda which could be added once Council reviews
the Commission's work plan for 2000 Lena asked about collaboration
between schools and facilities the schools have for child care Could even
collaborate with Parks and Rec Again Karen recommended that we focus on
the target group we want this to work for Single women who can't afford the
day care and the housing and are having difficulty with work and
transportation then we can look at issues Is the Commission looking for
money, or policy9 If it becomes a policy issue then Council may be able to
request certain City departments to assist the Commission in meeting the
needs Some needs will have to be addressed through community
collaborations such as a clearing house with Women's Center Continue to
work with Linda Fellion Council will need to know specifically what
Commission is needing from them Council will set the policy with the
direction from Commission so Commission should write up a policy statement
with recommendations and submit to Karen to carry on to Council for
adoption Could fall under zoning, planning, land use, Transfort,
Neighborhood Office, Human Rights Office etc Need to get a copy of the
Affordable Housing policy from Ken Waido
