HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 01/19/2005Commission on the Status of Women January 19, 2005 Minutes Attendance: Alison Johnston, Chris Linder, Barbara Goff, Stacey Arnold, Amanda Almon, Beth Etter, Paula Cole Minutes 1/19/05 Amanda Almon I. Business/Announcements: Beth mentions that KRFC wants to do a longer interview. Perhaps subject matter of the interview can include, contacting award winners from the Essay and/or Marcile N. Wood award. Suggestions to Beth on the topics for the interview. II. CSULiaison Update: Alison will contact Karen for next step in the process of nominating Chris Linder for joining the committee. Her email contact info is: III. Officer Elections: Positions described by Alison: Chair (central area of communication/meetings/agenda. Karen liaison. Hold people accountable for deadlines. Assisting and delegating.) Co -Chair (functions — fill in for chair/sharing duties) Secretary (bookkeeping, mail, organization — Update membership notebook.) Elections of officers at this January meeting? Beth suggests to postpone the elections until after the Essay Contest and M.N.W. Award ceremony and judging. Alison provides a brief history of her service on COSW in the past. She mentions that the commission now has a good direction to accomplish its goals. Is there a term limit for officers? Beth suggest: elect officers in April? Final word, wait and table officer elections to TBA. IV. Name Change Status: Cost for name change? Alison will follow up with Karen on the cost and process of approving the name change. Karen will need to find the appropriate channels of communication to get "Women's Commission" approved by council. We will need to be persistent in our communication with Karen. William addresses comment made from a community member on senior issues — and why the name change. Margarite Matagart (sp) Seniors: Housing Wealth Health Transportation Our work is not specifically targeted at certain segments in the community but all women in general. V. Essay Contest Committee Locate the letter for the downtown business center and confirm current contact address. Send letter to the Fort Collins DBA association asap. (Ask Alison for last years letter) Also contact the Foothills Fashion Mall and see if they are willing to donate prizes; contact the Mayor for an appearance at the event; booking the Space at the library on Harmony and Shields/. March 8t' for awards ceremony. Feb. 2nd Cindy collects essays and contacts Barb and/or Amanda for essay pick-up. Read 1 or 2 of last years essays as examples and review rubric. We should talk about why we liked them and or criticism. In the past, grading essays was on March 5d' 2002, everyone sat and graded for 6 hours. In 2003, everyone took them home and read and graded — this was easier/comfortable. We will take a count of the essays and divide up essays and form partners of 2 individuals to review each packet. We should send student winner letters (no later than) 2/21/05. We will plan on reading the essays the weekend of 2/4,5,6. We may need a follow up meeting to decide winners and review inconsistencies in grading gaps. The awards ceremony (in the past was held at the City training center) We should have it this year at the Harmony and Shields library. Book the Mayor appearance. 6-7PM for the event. Refreshments? Mayor presents the certificates and speaks briefly. Mayor shows up at 6:30PM — Need suggestions from COSW board members on making the event more interesting. Delegated activities: Rating of essays (All Committee) Prizes - letter (Amanda, Alison) Where/booking Library space (William) Booking Mayor (William) Refreshments (Find out — Alison) Trophies (Stacey) Awards ceremony for schools at the end of the school year (contact Cindy Ronan) MNW award winner speaks at the ceremony? Mentor and have kids read essays. (Alison) asks Mary (lat years MNW award winner to speak at the awards. Kids invite person who they wrote about in their essays and Parents Pick up Essays from Cindy on 2/2/05 (Barb) VI. Marcile N. Wood Award Committee: Fort Collins residents only? Loveland? Greeley? Women who are nominated that work on behalf of women in Fort Collins (e.x. Mary) Jennifer at Women's Center is having a planning meeting Jan. 26 h 4-5 at Harmony Library. Alison will email Melissa for scheduling conflicts with meeting next Wednesday. Paula will be available to attend the meeting. This planning meeting is to eliminate speeches that are long and drawn out and make the event fun and creative. Please email ideas to make the event fun/interesting to Paula/and or Melissa. A bunch of organizations present awards to each other year after year. MNW award is a new award that is unique among all the non -profits. The COSW would like to expand on the award in the future. Last year's event, the MC/host read a poem. And then started presenting the awards. A student group performed a play — Susan B. Anthony Skit. The event lasted 2.5 hours at the Sunset Events Center. COSW will need to purchase a plaque award (Alison), the person who wins this year will need to be issued a free ticket and receive a letter stating that they won. The person who nominated them also gets free ticket. HR office covers cost of plaque? Delegated activities: Public Service Announcements for MNW award — on local radio stations (Beth KRFC) Karla Smith — we will need to email her and ask how long the link will remain and we would like it up until the award is over. (Should Alison/Karen ask her or Amanda?) Barb will look into a press release in the Community Link Chris Linder (CSU Liaison) will attach the application and send out to CSU staff/Women's Center. Ceremony (Planning meeting — Paula) Plaque (Alison) MNW essays (All Committee to read) Deadline is 2/9/05 for MNW award. n Get copies of MNW application ahead of time to read.
