HomeMy WebLinkAboutCultural Resources Board - Minutes - 08/26/2004Cultural, Library and Recreational Services Lincoln Center CULTURAL RESOURCES BOARD MINUTES Regular Meeting — August 26, 2004 12:00 p.m. Lincoln Center 11 Council Liaison: Karen Weitkunat Staff Liaison: Jill Stilwell 11 Chairperson: Ayleen Burns Phone: 225-3937 (h) Vice -Chair: Ann Wilmsen A regular meeting of the Cultural Resources Board was held on Thursday, August 26 at 12:00 p.m. The following members were present: Board Members present: Sue Beck-Ferkiss, Ayleen Burns, Loren Hooper, Jack Steele, Jon Wilkinson, Ann Wilmsen Board Members absent: None Staff Members present: Cheryl Donaldson, Beth Higgins I. Call to Order — (12:06 p.m.) Ayleen Bums II. Consideration of agenda - No Changes - * Sue Beck-Ferkiss noted that she will be unable to attend the September meeting but will be present for the October meeting. III. Consideration of Minutes of July 29, 2004 Motion to accept minutes as presented — Loren Hooper Second — Ann Wilmsen Passed Unanimously Discussion Items IV. Arts & Humanities Month — October Ayleen Burns noted that she & Ann Wilmsen met with Brad Randall, the Graphic Designer for the City. Brad Randall agreed to help with the design of posters, bookmarks, and perhaps advertisements. Ayleen Bums added that a letter had been sent to David Short with the DBA (Downtown Business Association) requesting support. A copy of the letter was circulated to the Board. The DBA will provide $300.00 to assist in the printing costs. Posters will be distributed by Nancy York if the budget allows. Approximately 200 posters will be printed and 125 will be distributed. Ayleen Bums & Ann Wilmsen will follow-up with poster creation and distribution, and with Arts Alive. The Board discussed distribution of the bookmarks at local bookstores, library, and museum. Ayleen Burns shared an article about Arts and Humanities moth from the "Americans for the Arts." The article entitled "101 Things to do to Celebrate Arts & Humanities Month" was circulated to the Board and is available at www.americansforthearts.com The Board will brainstorm next year's plans for the month at the November meeting. Loren Hooper will coordinate participation with the Poudre School District with Tom Balchak. The Board discussed various ways to partner with the District. Review of Past Fort Fund Events Tuesday Night Neighborhood Meeting in City Park — Sue Beck-Ferkiss attended. It was raining, so turnout was light. The Fort Fund banner was not up and the logo was not included on any printed materials. Elderhaus Hoedown and Pig Roast — Loren Hooper attended. Turnout was good and the Fort Fund banner was up. Opera Fort Collins — Jack Steele attended. Turnout was marginal and less than previous performances. Ann Wilmsen added that she heard great reviews. La Via dell'Arte, The Road of Art — Arts Alive event attended by Jack Steele. Not a huge turnout, very little advertising. The Fort Fund logo was on printed materials and next to one of the artists, but the banner was not up. Ann Wilmsen added that it was a first -year event and the Board discussed its potential to grow. The Board discussed acquiring tickets to events. The organization should contact the Board, but the Board can contact the organization as well. Jack Steele noted that Libby Colbert sends letters with the Board contact. VI. Committee Reports Fort Collins Museum — Jack Steele — The MAC (Museum Advisory Council) has not met over the summer and will resume meetings in September. Cheryl Donaldson reported that the Museum has received 123 applications for the Curator of Education. 48 applications were submitted to museum staff for review and interviews will be scheduled for the second week of September. Cheryl Donaldson also reported on The Native American Music Festival scheduled for Labor Day weekend. Advertising for the vent has been strong with commercials on the Channel 27 and local Comcast Stations. Convention and Visitor's Bureau — Ayleen Bums reported that the CVB was vital group with many irons in the fire. A new advertising campaign was launched but not discussed at the meeting. Overall, the industry seems to be doing well, and the atmosphere is there to work together. Jehovah's Witnesses will be holding a meeting in Fort Collins reportedly bringing thousands of dollars to the community. Art in Public Places — Sue Beck Ferkiss reported that an artist has been chosen for the Prospect Gateway. Eventually, there will be two gateways with two perspectives- one from each of the two artists. The gateway is still under discussion. Chip Steiner of the DDA (Downtown Development Authority) and a representative of the Engineering Dept. were invited to the meeting. Prospect in the "Ecological Gateway to the Community," Harmony is the "Technological Gateway" and Mulberry is the "Commercial Gateway." VIL Other Business Jack Steele asked if there had been any work on the results of the BOB surveys (Building on Basics). Cheryl Donaldson reported that she had not heard anything yet. Jon Wilkinson inquired of the board if anyone new the history of New West Fest and if it was originally funded by Fort Fund. Cheryl Donaldson offered to research the event's beginnings. X.
