COMMISSION ON DISABILITIES
MEETING MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 14, 2000
Members present: Kathryn Johnson, Susan Williams, Mark Beck, Laura Burnett, Don Fish, Alan
Apt, Nancy Baker, Mark Kramer, David E. Marckres, Robert and Romola Fritz, Bob Palmer,
Steve Seefeld.
The meeting was called to order at 12:15 p.m by Mark Kramer, Chairman.
Doug Finnman, Information Systems Manager for the Information Technology Department of
the City of Fort Collins, brought copies of a survey to help his department learn more about how
the city's web site can best serve the people who have the potential to use it. He asked members
to fill out the survey and return it within the next week to him, to Bob Palmer or Steve Seefeld in
the Facilities Department, or to the Information Desk in City Hall.
The election for the coming year was held. The new officers are:
Chairperson: Nancy Baker
Vice Chairperson: Laura Burnett
Secretary/Recorder: Romola Fritz
Historian: Mark Beck
Linda Dowlen, Marketing Director of Transportation Demand Management for the Fort Collins
Transportation Department, visited the meeting to make a presentation on the new kiosk that she
and her department are creating for installation in Old Town. The purpose of the kiosk is to
provide visitors, employees, and residents with information about the various types of alternative
transportation that are available in Fort Collins. Robert Ballantyne, President of Genesis
Laboratory Systems, Inc., accompanied Linda for the presentation. The city has contracted with
his company to develop the computerized information system for the kiosk. Linda and Robert
explained the kiosk, showing a mock-up of the actual kiosk and a sample of the computer
hardware and software. They asked for input from Commission members as to any special needs
of the handicapped that should be accommodated in the final design of the kiosk. Several
suggestions were made by various members. The Commission thanked Linda and Robert for
their presentation and invited to them to display their demonstration at the Mayor's Awards
program in October.
Committee members then updated the planning for the upcoming Mayor's Awards ceremony,
which will be held October 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University Park Holiday Inn. It
will include technology and agency booths displaying assistive technology and services for
hiring of the handicapped, plus a brunch, a talk by a speaker yet to be selected, and the actual
awards. It was suggested that we invite as special guests some employers who have a long

history of employing the handicapped, in particular a local Wendy's and a local Radio Shack.
This would allow potential employers the opportunity to visit with these guests about their actual
experiences with handicapped employees. It was also suggested that Commission members be
sent forms so that we can submit nominations if we so choose. Alan Apt is working on press
coverage and plans to attend the editorial board meeting of the Fort Collins Coloradoan staff next
week. He is hoping to arrange for both an editorial and a news story about the ceremony.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Romola Fritz, Secretary
