REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
August 23, 2001
Council Information Center, City Hall West
Members present: Nancy Baker, Mark Beck, Laura Burnett, Ruth Bell Skogerboe, Susan Williams, Paul Ostrof,
Alan Apt, Kathryn Johnson, Rob and Romola Fritz, Steve Seefeld. Guests: Kimberly Stenberg, Steve Sutter.
The meeting was called to order by Nancy at 12:25 p.m. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as
presented, on a motion by Rob and a second by Laura.
Concerning the mailing list for the invitations to the Mayor's Awards ceremony, Nancy reported that Jill has
made a contact to obtain a list of employers who hire the disabled. Steve Seefeld requested input as to which
vendors we should invite back. Ruth mentioned concerns about representatives last year who displayed no
knowledge of their product or service. In response to a question about how to select vendors, Rob suggested
going from an employer -need basis, i.e., employee mobility needs on the job, opportunities to socialize during
breaks. A discussion developed the suggestion for employers to remind new hires to notify the company and
fellow workers about special health concerns in case of emergencies.
Steve Seefeld handed out a list of all the organizations that were invited to last year's ceremony and asked that
any additional names be e-mailed to him by September 7 so that his secretary can print mailing labels for the
September 13 meeting date, when COD members will be processing the invitations for mailing. Susan requested
that mailing labels for vendors to be invited also be made available for the September 13 meeting.
Laura reported that she has not yet been able to obtain a speaker for the event. Nancy asked her to continue her
search and suggested that a former recipient of the Employer of the Year award, specifically a representative
either from the Marriott Hotel or from Safeway, would be an appropriate choice.
Nancy asked all members to bring to the next meeting (September 13) their Pedestrian Safety Handbooks (which
Kathryn handed out at a previous meeting) and indicated that pedestrian safety will be the main topic for that
meeting.
Nancy also indicated that since we elected officers during September last year, it should be time to nominate and
elect them again this year. She asked that the nomination process also be put on the agenda for the September
13 meeting.
Mark and his guest, Kimberly Stenberg, gave a preview presentation of the program that the Practical Housing
for All subcommittee will be giving on September 10 to city council members, administrators, and building
industry people to introduce them to the PHA concept. The goal of the committee is to have the building
industry include PHA concepts as a part of common building practices and to offer these concepts to home
buyers by incorporating them into model homes.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:40 p.m. on a motion by Rob.
Respectfully submitted,
Romola Fritz
Secretary
