Collins to put a 100% accessible playground in the city's newest community part development currently
called Southwest Park.
The board held a community input meeting on February 4, 2OD4 to get the community's input on what
should go into the design of the playground. The board also held an informational gathering February 5,
2004 that introduced some Fort Collins residents to the playground building effort.
Action: Jerry: Bring literature on the playground to next regular meeting.

Report from Lamy Bradshaw:
TIME News Newsletter
The State of Colorado is looking to cut $80M from Medicaid
The eight full rehab specialist centers in Colorado are currently lobbing the state legislature to avoid cuts
that don't make sense. For example, studies show that the cost for a bed rested patient is S400,000fpatient
greater than the cost of providing assistive equipment The group is also lobbying for qualification
standards for equipment dealers.
There may cane a time in the near future where consumer advocacy will be needed to help convince the
legislature to maintain some funding. This is an area where the Commission would be helpful. The
Commission requested that Mr. Bradshaw notify us if the time came where consumer advocacy would be
necessary.
Colorado's approval process for getting financial assistance for equipment has recently changed making it
more difficult to obtain the assistance.
Curren Medicare rules starve that power equipment canna be replaced for 5 years after purchase.
Because of the current rules for power equipment, many people are getting full power equipment when all
that is really needed is a power scooter in Mr. Bradshaw's opinion
Mr. Bradshaw also mentioned that there will be a 5 state Assistive Technology convention coming up soon.
The Commission requested that he contact us with more detailed information on this.
Report from Steve Rierson:
Private companies here in Fort Collins are still piling snow in the handicapped spots.
Smaller parking lots are the biggest problem.
Ideas to help educate the public and businesses:
Call Corporate Office.
Put together a leaflet explaining the law. Perhaps with a picture depicting the violation.
In places where them is no handicapped parking signage, could the city post the signs and charge the
property owner?
Doesn't the ADA supersede city ordinances in this respect?
According to the City of Fort Collins Zoning Department, parking lots from before 1987 are not required to
comply with current regulations until they are updated.
Action: Consider an" for changes in city code.
Action: Rachel: Find person in charge of aoningloompliance in parking lots. Request they attend
next Commission meeting.
