HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 09/18/2000City of Fort Collins Office a Commission on the Status of Women Minutes September 18, 2000 Present Annrnarie Izuel Evans, Tam Frager, Haemi Cha, Sharon Bnngelson, Sarah Lamia, Lisa Gorham, Rita Anastasio, Lena Sunthankar Liaisons Barbara Catbagan Spalding, Human Rights Office, Kim Walkenhorst, Larimer County Guests Deb Thompson Excused Absent Absent Deb Tamlm I Call to Order 6 10 Minutes approved 6 12 Haime moved and Sara seconded, carved unanimously II Review Agenda III Announcements Tam mentioned Colorado Law Maker Awards invitation Diane Gregg liaison from Crossroads has resigned Deb Thompson gave information on Oct being Domestic Violence Month IV Business Items Election of Officers Barb explained that officers should be elected in Aug or Sept according to B&C Manual Lisa nominated Annmane for Chair, Sharon seconded, vote carved unanimously Annmane nominated Haime, Tam seconded, vote carved unanimously Haime nominated Tam as secretary, Tam declined According to discussion, the co-chair position was abolished by unanimous vote Sharon nominated Haime as Sec Sara seconded vote carved unanimously Work Plan Barb explained that the work plan is due by Nov 30 Time will be set aside for the scope of the workplan in the Oct meeting Daycare Direction Annmane asked the commission about direction for the daycare issue Sara suggested that the baton be passed on to a coalition or to some other agency and move on Lisa suggested that a subcommittee be formed to investigate why the daycare for low-income children is under -funded in Lanmer County as compared to Weld County Subcommittee was formed Committee members Lisa Gorham, Kim Walkenhorst Another subcommittee for PR around the problem of daycare was suggested Commission On the Status of Women 405 Cam on • PO Box 580 Fort Collins CO 80522 0580 (970) 221 6871 • FAX (970) 224 6050 TDD (970) 224 6004 Symposium/Week of the Child (WOC) Ann lane will attend Week of the Child meetings beginning in Oct Lisa suggested CSW endorse WOC Rita suggested that volunteer activities for WOC be done on a completely personal basis as far as things like stuffing envelopes, etc She also suggested that Annmane go to the meeting to see if the WOC committee wants something like the symposium Members gave Ammnane suggestions about what to explain at the WOC meeting are they interested in the symposium that we want to create awareness about the crisis in daycare Annemarie brought the attention to the ideas for the Symposium considered at the last meeting, which were in the minutes Rita suggested that CSW activities might not be the same kind of activities that are done during the Week of the Child Annmane suggested that maybe the Commission on the Status of Women be autonomous in doing the Symposium Sharon gave an up -date on her communication with Colorado State University, Toni Morrison in Early Childhood Sharon has had a hard time getting in touch with her Sharon said that the commission should not put on the symposium, but be the catalyst for it Rita asked what the draw would be for big companies to come together for the Symposium Lisa suggested a citywide survey be used to find the interest level for the Symposium Sara suggested that commission members sit outside grocery stores to get the survey Others thought this would skew the results Lisa suggested that there is a research class that would do the survey for us Rita asked about the postcard idea Annmane explained how post card thing would work Annmarie went back to explaining what the Symposium would be like And asked what kind of committees are needed if CSW want to do this Members agreed there are two separate issues On site daycare, daycare for low-income children —the two are separate and related The question arose At what point does CSW make a decision about what to do with the symposium idea9 Members decided the answer After the WOC meeting, after the meeting with Colorado State University people Action Sharon will contact Colorado State University day care Lisa will contact research/ ournalism at Colorado State University for survey Annmane will go to WOC meeting to discuss symposium Kim will find out about welfare reform monies in the county V Adjourn 7 40 PM Commission On the Status of Women 09/25/00 VI Preliminary Agenda October 16, 2000 Call to Order I Minutes approved II Review Agenda III Announcements IV Business Items Work Plan 2001 Revisit on -Site daycare Follow-up with Deb Tamlm, overlays for daycare and Transfort Report on action items for symposium V Adjourn Commission On the Status of Women 09/25/00
