Report on action items for symposium
■ Annmarie followed up with Dr Ray Yang from the Department of Human
Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University Dr Yang is
currently trying to put a meeting together that would involve Commission
members, Dr Yang representing the Department of Human Development and
Family Studies, and members from the Institute on Family at Colorado State
University
Sara spoke with Linda Fellion from the Women s Center in order to find out
more information about the Week of the Child Sara learned that a booth at the
fair normally costs $150 but that Ms Fellion would see if an exception could
be made for the Commission Ms Fellion did suggest, however that
Commission on the Status of Women 1

conducting a survey at the fair may not provide a reliable sample and
suggested that the Commission look at other alternatives for a survey
Linda Fellion also offered information on what other communities are doing in
order to subsidize the gap between Federal dollars and the actual cost of
daycare For example, Boulder dedicates a portion of its sales tax to cover the
gap
■ The Commission also discussed the NPR series on child care The most
recent broadcast highlighted the universal daycare provided by Quebec,
Canada The system has 80 000 available slots that are filled on a first -come
first -serve basis Participants are charged $8 a day for the day care
Commission members discussed the possibility of creating a survey in order to
better understand the community's needs surrounding day care Heather
checked with Kelly DiMartmo to find out what possibilities were available to the
Commission Heather learned that the Commission could include an insert in
the utility billing and contact Kelly for the details However the Commission
would have to pay for the cost of the copies (53,000) if it decided to create an
insert Kelly also noted that the Commission would not be able to include
questions on the city-wide survey that is currently be created The survey is
more of an operational survey for service areas and if the door was opened for
one advisory group to include questions that the option would have to be made
available to all groups This would make the survey too large and
unmanageable
