Call Meeting to Order: The regular meeting of the Youth Advisory Board was called
to order by chairperson Sarah April at 7:10 p.m.
Approval of Minutes: On a motion by Ana Rocca and seconded by Mera Geis, the
minutes of the regular meeting of January 3, 2001 were approved unanimously
(7-0).
Agenda Review: Delete #7 (Northside Aztlan Community Center Update). Added
Skateboard Park Update.
Citizen Participation: Linda Miller and Janna West Kowalski, both with Latimer
County Health Department, work with the tobacco education prevention program. Linda
works with prevention; Janna deals more with secondhand smoke issues. The County has
received settlement money from the tobacco companies, and a good portion of that will
be used for prevention/cessation education.
Youth coalitions around the state (with 2 in Fort Collins) are assessing their communities
to find out why youths are smoking. Linda and Janna want feedback from the Youth
Advisory Board about effective means of reaching youths in our community.
Some immediate suggestions were to incorporate this topic in the next TV show; develop
more creative ways than "don't do it", maybe hands-on types of activities; taking
biological, scientific approach to the hazards of smoking; educating parents on how to
speak to their kids to reinforce what they are being taught in school. Junior high age
teens seem to be most vulnerable; smoking makes them feel more adult.

The Fort Collins coalition members will attend the April YAB meeting to survey Board
members and to give them the survey that they can distribute to their peers.
Agenda:
TELEVISION SHOW UPDATE
The filming for the first show went well. The show will begin airing in March following
editing. "What's important to teens" survey results were presented as well as clips that
were filmed off -site.
Topic for the next show will be discrimination, and the planning meeting will take place
on Monday, February 12 at 5:30 PM at the YAC. Sam Pagni from TEAM Fort Collins
may attend. Filming will tentatively take place on February 24.
Board members suggested that drug use (Ecstasy in particular) might be a good topic for
a future show.
YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER REPLACEMENT TASK FORCE UPDATE
Ana Rocca and several other Task Force members attended a meeting with Poudre
School District Superintendent Don Unger. She also attended the January meeting of the
Parks and Recreation Board where the Board decided to write a resolution to have City
Council adopt a resolution to support the replacement of the Youth Activity Center.
Adam Forest from Poudre High School is distributing letters for students to sign in
support of replacement.
Ana Rocca will write a letter to City Council that will be signed by other Youth Advisory
Board members requesting replacement. YAB member were told they could participate
in the citizen participation portion of City Council meetings.
SKATEBOARD PARK UPDATE
The contract has been awarded for concrete work. Not all funding has been identified,
but that should not stifle the process. When the construction schedule is set, Dave
Mosnik will invite John Baise to attend a Youth Advisory Board meeting and bring a
model of the park.
NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE
Deleted from agenda.
YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE
The February activity calendar was distributed as well as a letter eliminating adult usage
