BOARD ORIENTATION INFORMATION/DISCUSS ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Janet Urban distributed the "General Information" that was drafted by theYouth Advisory
Board in 2000. The mission statement, board history, logistics, and attendance policy are
all included in this document.
New members to the YAB stated that they had not been briefed during the
application/interview process as to the function of the Board. Peggy Bowers provided an
explanation, and Mera Geis elaborated based on her attendance to a Council work session
in August. At that work session, the YAB requested that the City Council liaison (Mayor
Ray Martinez) attend meetings quarterly.

Ana Rocca described the Board's TV show that was broadcast on cable Channel 10
during the latter part of the school year 2000-2001. Peggy reviewed some of the issues
that have been brought to the Board over the past several years — curfew, smoking
ordinance, Transfort items. Board members were informed that they are the mouthpiece
for youths regarding City policy. Dave Mosnik reminded YAB members that each Board
meeting provides an opportunity for citizen participation, and anyone in the youth
community is welcome and encouraged to attend and speak. Peggy told the Board that
teen input is requested regarding what the Recreation Division can do to accommodate
their needs and wishes. Janet Urban reviewed the meeting dates/times and the attendance
policy.
Election of officers will take place at the October meeting. Peggy explained the officers
roles.
Peggy told the Board that they will need to devise a work plan for the coming year
comprised of issues of importance to youths.
YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE/FUND-RAISING
Peggy introduced Brownie McGraw who has chaired the task force that was formed 2 '/2
years ago to find a new location for the Youth Activity Center. Even though the YAC
has moved to a new site, the task force is still active and involved in fund-raising to add a
gymnasium to the facility. The task force will make a presentation to the school district's
Parent Advisory Board next month. Ms. McGraw, on behalf of the fund-raising
committee, challenged the YAB to come up with ideas to raise funds.
The grand opening of the new YAC is scheduled for September 9 from Noon-4:00 p.m.
Regular hours will begin the following Monday. Junior high school students will receive
a business card with hours of operation and methods of transportation from their school
to the YAC.
New features at the YAC include a dance floor, very nice weight/cardio equipment, a
climbing wall, possibly a coffee cart. Staff reiterated that they are open to ideas for
programming.
NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE
Eighty-five teams participated in the summer basketball tournament. Volunteers are
being sought for the tutoring program (grades K-12). Wrestling begins September 25;
volunteers are needed for this program also.
OTHER BUSINESS
Janet handed out a flyer announcing the grand opening of the skate park in Edora
Park on Friday, September 7.
Again, Peggy challenged the Board to develop ideas for the work plan — the more
ideas, the better.
