READ ON! FORT COLLINS: A SHARED COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE
Kay Stevens distributed a packet of information explaining this effort that is being
spearheaded by Leadership Fort Collins. The first step is for a group of 30 to select a
book which will be read by community members. The selection committee will meet
every Monday in March from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the main library to narrow the selection
down to 5 books. The book will be chosen by April, project marketing will be done in

the summer, the book will be read in the fall, and the author's visit will be scheduled for
late 2002 or early 2003.
Board members endorsed the concept, and Ana Rocca, Board chair, will sit on the book
selection committee.
TOBACCO ISSUES
Dierdre Sullivan and Janna Kowalski from the Alliance for Smoke -free Kids &
Communities conducted a power point presentation regarding the hazards of secondhand
smoke. Following the presentation, the Board unanimously agreed to write a letter to
Council expressing their support of smoke -free public places. Interested members will
meet on February 11 at 4:00 to draft the letter which will then be edited by Janet Urban
prior to being sent to Council.
NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY
VISTA Abby Pence shared information about National Youth Service Day on April 26
and April 27. Last year there were 4 projects around the community, and the goal was to
get 50 youths involved. There were about 58 who participated not including members of
SCIT and the Lincoln Junior High service learning council, which was another 30 people.
The chosen project must be completed in one day.
CSU FUND-RAISING GROUP REPORT
The CSU group that is planning this fund-raiser notified Peggy Bowers that there is a
basketball tournament scheduled for April 6 beginning at 9:30 a.m. with competition
between the high schools. They are currently looking for food sponsors. A representative
from this group will attend our March meeting.
FOLLOW-UP ON JUNIOR HIGH VISITS
Mera attempted to contact Webber but was unsuccessful. She hopes to be able to report
at the March meeting. Ana's attempt to visit Lesher was also unsuccessful. Kaise visited
Heritage (junior and senior high schools). Students there want a coffee shop. Their
opinion of the YAC was that it is just for people who are interested in sports; some of the
junior high schoolers said their parents don't want them at the YAC with 19-year-olds
and would like the maximum age lowered. Blevins students, who were contacted by
Amy, thought the YAC was mostly for sports as well.
Ana will visit Lesher and Pioneer, Robbie will contact Ridgeview, and Amy and Kaise
will visit Liberty Commons. All students contacted will be invited to attend Board
meetings and to visit the FirstCall website. Linda Nerger of FirstCall will provide
resource lists and bookmarks to be distributed.
YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE
The January participation and February calendars were distributed. Ski/snowboard trips

have been very successful this year, and staff is hoping to start a 3-on-3 basketball
league. Some groups are starting to utilize non -prime time to work out on weight
equipment.
NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE
Cinco de Mayo is coming in May; Frank Martinez suggested that the Youth Advisory
Board might want to set up a booth. The NACC and Educo are cooperating on
developing a mural that will be painted at NACC. Again, the YAB is welcome to
participate if they wish. The Optimist club is having a contest at NACC for youngsters
ages 8-13 for passing, shooting and dribbling on February 23. Staff is in the process of
planning summer activities and welcome suggestions. Staff also needs ideas on how to
distribute donated clothing from Wal-Mart.
The tutoring program is going well, and literacy is becoming more the focus. The
program may expand to 5 days/week next year as opposed to 2.
OTHER BUSINESS:
• Dave Mosnik reported that there was a great turnout for the City's job fair on January
24. Applications will be accepted until March 29 for ages 14-19. Larimer County is
