JUNIOR SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS PRESENTATION
Local Kiwanis and Optimists organizations are interested in forming youth groups that
focus on youth mentorship, leadership and community service. A brief video was shown
that highlighted J.O.O.I. (Junior Optimists Occidental International). Board members felt
it might be difficult to recruit members without having a school connection.
Representatives from these service clubs will be invited to the next Board meeting to
answer questions and provide further information.
YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE
The YAC was closed the last week in July for cleaning and maintenance. Staff
distributed the August participation report and the September calendar of activities. A
new pool table was recently acquired. Staff, with the help of participants from Turning
Point and an Eagle Scout troop, removed all of the pea gravel from the landing area of the
climbing and bouldering walls and replaced it with foam, which provides a much cleaner
and safer area.
Fund-raising for a gymnasium began in June. Current donations total $78,000; goal is
$750,000. A youth fund-raising group was formed with representation from each high
school, but more participation is needed. The next meeting is September 15 at 7:00 PM.
The youth group's goal is to raise $5,000 with the hope of finding matching grants, etc.
A barbecue with entertainment and line dancing will be held on Sunday, October 20 at
the YAC to raise funds. A Nintendo tournament will be held, and a competition among
the 3 high schools will be held at Fazoli's. The adult fund-raisers are selling "feet".
Grants are also being written.
NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE
Tutoring at NACC this school year will be held 4 days a week instead of 2 as in the past.

required. The boxing club is currently training; wrestling for ages 6+ begins September
25. ALAS (leadership group of teen girls) meets on Thursdays from 6:00-7:30 PM.
The summer basketball program had the most participation ever. Games were held 5
days a week from 4:00-10:30 PM for nearly 100 teams, grades 3 through young adult.
