Support Suprv. — Recreation Division Guest(s) Present: Thomasina Cooper Call Meeting to Order: Meeting called to order by Chairperson Mera Geis at 7:03 p.m. Approval of Minutes from January 8, 2003: On a motion by Jonathan Fanning and seconded by Abby Zier, the minutes were unanimously approved (6-0). Agenda Review: No changes. Citizen Participation: No citizen participation. Agenda: REVISIT SURVEY Peggy Bowers distributed the condensed version of the survey results and is working on a cover letter. The Coloradoan definitely wants to do an article and may have a staff member in attendance at the next meeting. Kaise will give the revised packet to Kathleen Duff for her review prior to the meeting. DISCUSS 2004-05 BUDGET A letter was drafted and signed by Board chair Mera Geis to be sent to the City Manager with the Board's recommendations for the upcoming City budget. The Board requested continued funding for the Youth Activity Center and the Northside Aztlan Community Center as these two facilities provide numerous opportunities for the youth in Fort Collins through both programmed activities and drop -in recreation. A copy of the "Opportunities Needed" graph that was gleaned from the recent junior and senior high school survey conducted by the Board was attached to the letter. Youth Advisory Board Minutes April 2, 2003 Page 2 CITY COUNCIL'S POLICY AGENDA At the request of City Council, the Youth Advisory Board identified the following issues and concerns as important for City Council to address over the next two years: Exhibit ongoing commitment to the youth of Fort Collins • Improve communication with the Youth Advisory Board to enhance the effectiveness of the Board. • Recognize and examine further youth's perception that adults do not trust them (reference survey results dated 1/03). • Continue to support City -administered programs for youth. • Further investigate recreational and leisure opportunities desired by youth (reference survey results, dated 1/03). YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE/FUND-RAISING Dave Mosnik distributed the participation report for March and the April calendar. The application deadline for youth employment was March 31. Interviews are scheduled for April 12 for the very few positions that are available. April 12 is also National Youth Service Day from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. There will be a project at the Youth Activity Center that day which is open to anyone. YAC participants are courteous and well -disciplined and have taken ownership of the facility. A direct mailer was sent to 1,700 households as part of the gymnasium fund-raising effort. NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER. Northside staff recently took 6 girls to a national wrestling meet where all six placed and one received an individual award. There is an ongoing need for tutors at the NACC. OTHER BUSINESS • Four seniors will be resigning from the Board. • Kaise Allen attempted to get in touch with the Greeley youth commission; Mera Geis was unsuccessful in getting in touch with the Loveland youth board.
