HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 05/22/2003COMMISSION ON DISABILUY Regular Meeting Minutes May 22, 2003 Members mesent: Mark Beck, Jill Lancaster, Laura BumM Susan Williams, Joanie Cook, Jerry Patterson, Alan Apt. Guests: Jeff Hams. City staff: Rachel Palmer, Tracy Ochsner. Mark called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm at the Council Information Center. Minutes approved unanimously. Motion made by Laura and seconded by Susan. Old Business By-laws change vote — The COD voted to change section C.I. of the by-laws to read "Regular meetings of the COD will be held at least once a month." Motion: Regular meetings of the COD will be held on the second Thursday of the month in the Council Information Center and the a Thursday of the month will be set aside for optional sub -committee work in the Council Information Center. Motion made by Joanie, seconded by Alan. Passes unanimous►v. New Business Mark attended Barrier Awareness Days in Loveland last week. The event was very well attended — standing room only. Most attendees had some connection with the city of Loveland. The event was well accepted and very well done. Mark was given some time to promote PHA and the Art Show. Sub-Committee/Program Reports By -Laws- Committee is working on nine other amendments. Mayor's Awards — Joanie reported that Norlarco will make a contribution to the Mayor's Awards. The sub -committees will need to determine the best use for the money. Tracy met with the assistant city manager and received a positive response to the BIN proposal and indicated we should proceed with the Mayor's Awards as planned with the BIN. October 15 is on the calendar for the appropriate city officials including the Mayor. Nominations — The sub -committee would like to use Norlarco's contribution to pay for the mailing of the nomination materials. The sub- committee will be reviewing the award categories and the nomination materials. Marilee Boylan has been asked to serve on the committee — still waiting to hear back from her. Tracy is still looking for the nomination mailing list. The sub -committee will meet on the 0 Thursday in June at the Council Information Center at 12:15 pm Art Show- Susan reported that Ruth is doing an amazing job in promoting the show and getting everyone excited about it. All COD members should hand out those Art Show brochures! PHA —'Me Loveland Housing Authority had an open house on a house that was an "accessible home." Mark is gettingin touch with the architect and builder to encourage more of these types of homes. An idea for the PHA was to try and get an accessible home on the "Parade of Homes" tour. Habitat for Humanity just started contraction on a home that is going to be built all by women and the architect has included all PHA designs in the home. Alan talked to the planning department about including PHA goals in the next revision of the The City Plan. Their response was that this is a good time to propose it and they will look at it as they revise their goals. Heavy Doors — Susan had a frustrating experience with a heavy bathroom door in a public restaurant this past week and she encouraged all COD members to take a few heavy Door brochures and distribute them when you get a chance. Accessible Technology — Jerry reported that we would like to get accessible technology vendors at the Mayor's Awards to showcase what is available. It would also be great to have a list of companies and the products they provide for our resource guide. Other Business — Mark shared "The Ten Commandments of Communicating with People with Disabilities Speak directly to the person rather than through a companion or a sign language interpreter. II. Always offer to shake hands when introduced. 111. Always identify yourself and others who may be with you when meeting someone who is blind.
