HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Advisory Board - Minutes - 02/09/2022 1 City of Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board Minutes Wednesday February 9, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. Virtual Meeting on Zoom Fort Collins, Colorado Mission: The Senior Advisory Board shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Fort Collins City Council on programs and policies that help aging citizens live full and interesting lives and continue to contribute, participate, and share in the life of the community. I. Call to Order a. Meeting called to order at 11:30 am. II. Guest introductions Dr. Tim McLemore Lawrence Pollack III. Public Participation Pattie O’Connor, Jim Fellion, Gabby Rivera, Jillian Boyd, Joyce DeVaney Suzanne King, Gordon and Lynette IV. Administrative Items a. Attendance: Councilmember Susan Gutowski, Myles Crane, Alicia Durand, David Kovach, Allen Kress, Nancy Luttropp, Jeanne Hoag, Deanna O’Connell, Mary Roberts and Staff Liaison Sarah Olear, b. Approval of Minutes: Motion: David Kovach; Seconded: Nancy Luttropp c. Correspondence; SAB received a response from the Mayor’s Office as well as communication from Tammi Pusheck with updates about new board members. There will be no interviews for new board members until City Council has a chance to meet on the issue on April 26th. d. Today’s Guest Speaker Dr. Tim McLemore, Executive Director of Elderhaus provided a general overview of the organization and how it supports individuals with disabilities with a focus on older adults with dementia. Topics included an Elderhaus history, program overview, funding sources, marketing needs, transportation, and diversity within the organization. New Business: Budgeting for Outcomes Lawrence Pollack, Fort Collins Budget Director shared updates on the City’s Budgeting for Outcomes (BFO) process. SAB as well as other B&C’s can help by attending council sessions as well as providing written feedback regarding modifications, changes, or suggestions for the budget. Offers are gathered and created through April; reviewed in May and June which is when boards and commissions can provide feedback. Budgets are then taken to council where the recommended budget is shared on September 2. Budget information can be found on the budget website: www.fcgov.com/budget. Communications with Socially Isolated Older Adults: Gabby Rivera and Jillian Boyd, who work at Columbine’s New Mercer Commons, shared ideas on how to reach socially isolated older adults. They recommended communicating through Activity Directors and other department heads. These facility contacts can then disperse information to residents. Gabby and Jillian volunteered to work on a survey for regarding how older residents can learn about community programs. VII Ongoing initiatives Missing Middle Homes Project with PAFC Housing Priority Group – Alan Kress attended prior month’s meeting. Nancy Luttropp attended most recent meeting and commented about the Missing Middle Housing with PAFC. Developers are having a challenging time offering affordable middle housing because water costs are so high to start a project. They are trying to reduce grass areas in some new developments to reduce water costs and are encouraging Zero Landscaping. The group is still looking to encourage an increase in duplexes and manufactured homes. They are looking at other organizations across the country and how they alleviate this issue. Senior Center – Sarah Olear, Jeanne Hoag and Mary Roberts Jeanne Hoag has proposed a program which the City is reviewing for adults 80 years and older to meet every other month starting in June. Topics would cover matters of positive social well-being of interest to octogenarians. Neighborhood Livability Activities SAB Community Outreach – State of the City meeting February 22, 2022. Some initiatives cited including the FCPS Mental Health Team and the 2021 Strategic Housing Plan were issues SAB had addressed to Council. PAFC Community Updates: Transportation, Housing, Health &Wellness, Culture of Aging: No further discussion. Bicycle Advisory Committee – Sarah Olear There are currently no SAB members with availability to attend the Bicycle Advisory Committee meetings.
